Application Isolation Mode Defaults

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

When you install IIS 6.0 on a computer that does not contain an earlier version of IIS, IIS 6.0 automatically sets the application isolation mode to worker process isolation mode. If you upgrade from an earlier version of IIS, IIS 6.0 sets the application isolation mode to IIS 5.0 isolation mode.

Table 2.3 lists the IIS 6.0 default settings for the two application isolation modes.

Table 2.3 Default IIS 6.0 Installation Settings for Each Application Isolation Mode

Type of Installation Application Isolation Mode

New installation of IIS 6.0 (clean install)

Worker process isolation mode

Upgrade from an earlier version of IIS 6.0, such as a beta release

No change in isolation mode

Upgrade from IIS 5.0

IIS 5.0 isolation mode

Upgrade from IIS 4.0

IIS 5.0 isolation mode

Although IIS 5.0 isolation mode is the default application isolation mode when you upgrade from earlier versions of IIS, be sure to test your applications for compatibility issues so that, if possible, you can upgrade to worker process isolation mode.
