Configure Hyper-V

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

You can configure the server running Hyper-V™ by modifying Hyper-V settings. You can use these settings to specify where certain files are stored by default and control interactions such as keyboard combinations and log-on credentials.

There are two categories of Hyper-V settings:

  • Server settings, which specify the default location of virtual hard disks and virtual machines.

  • User settings, which let you customize interactions with Virtual Machine Connection and let you display messages and wizard pages if you hid them previously. Settings for Virtual Machine Connection include the mouse release key and Windows key combinations.

To configure Hyper-V settings

  1. Open Hyper-V Manager. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Hyper-V Manager.

  2. In the Actions pane, click Hyper-V Settings.

  3. In the navigation pane, click the setting that you want to configure.

  4. Click OK to save the changes and close Hyper-V Settings, or click Apply to save the changes and configure other settings.

Configuring Hyper-V when you use smart card credentials

By default, Virtual Machine Connection uses the same credentials you used to log on to your current Windows session as the credentials to establish a session to a running virtual machine. However, Virtual Machine Connection cannot use smart card credentials automatically to log on to a running virtual machine. You can avoid this problem by modifying the User Credentials setting so that you will be prompted to enter your credentials.

To configure Hyper-V when you use smart card credentials

  1. Follow the instructions in the previous procedure to open Hyper-V Settings.

  2. In the navigation pane, click User Credentials.

  3. Clear the Use default credentials check box.

  4. Click OK to save the changes and close Hyper-V Settings, or click Apply to save the changes and configure other settings.

Additional considerations

  • By default, membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure. However, an administrator can use Authorization Manager to modify the authorization policy so that a user or group of users can complete this procedure.
