Event ID 4002 — WLAN AutoConfig Service

WLAN AutoConfig is a service that configures wireless security and connectivity settings. WLAN AutoConfig configures Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 wireless adapters for connectivity to ad-hoc wireless networks, small-office wireless infrastructure networks, and for networks that provide 802.1X-authenticated network access. When enabled, WLAN AutoConfig settings apply to all IEEE 802.11 wireless network adapters that are installed on a computer.

Start the WLAN AutoConfig service

"WLAN AutoConfig service has failed to start" errors 

This event is typically a result of win32 errors. This event is generated if the win32 reason code is returned when the WLAN AutoConfig component calls win32 APIs.

There are two methods to determine if the WLAN AutoConfig Service is not started:

  • Determine if the WLAN AutoConfig Service is not started by using the Services snap-in
  • Determine if the WLAN AutoConfig Service is not startedd on a specific wireless connection by using the netsh wlan command

To perform these procedures, you must be logged on by using a local computer Administrator account, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If you are not logged on by using an account that belongs to the Administrators group, you must be able to supply administrator credentials, in order to run the command prompt as administrator.

Determine if the WLAN AutoConfig Service is not started by using the Services snap-in:

To determine if the WLAN AutoConfig Service is not started by using the Services snap-in:

  1. On a client computer, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.
  2. In Computer Management (Local), click Services and Applications, and then click Services.
  3. In the details pane, under Name, navigate to WLAN AutoConfig.

The WLAN AutoConfig service is not started if the Status column for WLAN AutoConfig lists anything other than Started.

Determine if the WLAN AutoConfig Service is not startedd on a specific wireless connection by using the netsh wlan** command**

To determine if the WLAN AutoConfig Service is not startedd on a specific wireless connection by using the netsh wlan command:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK, to open a command prompt.
  2. At the command prompt, type netsh, press ENTER, type wlan, and then press ENTER.
  3. In the netsh wlan context, type show autoconfig, and then press ENTER.

The WLAN AutoConfig service is not started if the command renders the message: Auto Configuration logic is disabled on interfaceWireless Network Connection (where Wireless Network Connection is the name of the wireless connection in Network Connections).

Starting WLAN AutoConfig service

  • Start WLAN AutoConfig service by using the Services snap-in
  • Start the WLAN AutoConfig service on a specific wireless interface by using the netsh wlan command

  2. In Computer Management (Local), click Services and Applications, and then click Services.
  3. In the details pane, under Name, navigate to WLAN AutoConfig.
  4. Right-click WLAN AutoConfig, click Properties, and then on the General tab, do the following:
    • In Startup type, select Automatic.
    • In Service Status, click Start.
  5. Click OK.

Start the WLAN AutoConfig service on a specific wireless interface by using the Netsh wlan command

To start the WLAN AutoConfig service on a specific wireless interface by using the Netsh wlan command.

  1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Accessories.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator, to run the command prompt as administrator.
  3. At the command prompt, type netsh, press ENTER, type wlan, and then press ENTER.
  4. In the Netsh wlan context, type set autoconfig enabled=yes interface="Wireless Network Connection" where Wireless Network Connection is the name of the wireless connection in Network Connections.
  5. Press ENTER.
  6. Restart the computer.

Verify

There are two methods you can use to determine if the WLAN AutoConfig service is running:

  • Verify that WLAN AutoConfig service is running by using the Server Manager Services snap-in
  • Verify that WLAN AutoConfig service is running by using the netsh wlan command

  1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.
  2. In Computer Management (Local), click Services and Applications, and then click Services.
  3. In the details pane, under Name, navigate to WLAN AutoConfig.
  4. Select WLAN AutoConfig, and in the Status column, verify that WLAN AutoConfig is started. The WLAN AutoConfig service is running if the status displays Started.

Verify that WLAN AutoConfig service is running by using the netsh wlan command

To verify that WLAN AutoConfig service is running by using the netsh wlan command:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK, to open a command prompt.
  2. At the command prompt, type netsh, press ENTER, type wlan, and then press ENTER.
  3. In the netsh wlan context, type show autoconfig, and then press ENTER.
  4. The WLAN AutoConfig service is running if the "show autoconfig" command renders the message: Auto configuration logic is enable on interface "Wireless Network Connection," (where Wireless Network Connection is the name of the wireless connection in Network Connections).
