Set the Default Inventory Method

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista

To complete this procedure, you need the appropriate administrative credentials for the affected Removable Storage item. To maintain system security, rather than logging on as an administrator, log on as a user without administrative credentials and then run Removable Storage with administrative credentials.

To run Removable Storage with administrative credentials

  1. Open a command prompt with administrative credentials. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then point to Run as administrator.

  2. Provide administrative credentials for an account in the Administrators group, and then click Submit. A command prompt with administrative credentials opens.

  3. At the command prompt, type mmc.exe.

Set the default inventory method

To set the default inventory method

  1. In Removable Storage, double-click Libraries.

  2. Right-click the library you want to set the inventory method for, and then click Properties.

  3. On the General tab, in Inventory Method, click the method you want to use: None, Fast, or Full.

Additional considerations

  • A fast inventory only checks for storage slots that have changed status between being occupied and unoccupied. A full inventory with bar-coded media will read bar-code information. Otherwise, the tape or disk is mounted and the on-media identifier is read.

  • The selected inventory method is automatically performed each time a library door has been accessed.

  • A full inventory is always performed when a mount operation fails, regardless of inventory method selected. To disable this feature, clear the Perform full inventory on mount failure check box

  • This procedure applies only to automated libraries.
