Event ID 30016 — RRAS DHCP Relay Agent Packet Discarding
Applies To: Windows Server 2008
The DHCP Relay Agent is a Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) relay agent that relays Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) messages between DHCP clients and DHCP servers on different IP networks. For each IP network segment that contains DHCP clients, either a DHCP server or a computer acting as a DHCP Relay Agent is required.
If the DHCP Relay Agent (IPBOOTP) is discarding packets, DHCP configuration with peer clients and servers might fail.
Event Details
Product: | Windows Operating System |
ID: | 30016 |
Source: | Microsoft-Windows-RasIpBootp |
Version: | 6.0 |
Symbolic Name: | IPBOOTPLOG_HOP_COUNT_TOO_HIGH |
Message: | IPBOOTP has discarded a packet received on the local interface with IP address: %1. The packet had a hop-count of: %2, which is greater than the maximum value allowed in packets received for this interface. The hop-count field in a DHCP REQUEST packet indicates how many times the packet has been forwarded from one relay-agent to another. |
Resolve
Check memory status, reinstall DHCP Relay Agent, or configure DHCP Relay Agent hop count
Possible resolutions:
- This computer might be low on memory. For more information, see the "Check memory usage on the server" section.
- Remove and reinstall the DHCP Relay Agent. For more information, see the "Remove and reinstall the DHCP Relay Agent" section.
- Check that the hop count field is correctly configured. For more information, see the "Configure DHCP Relay Agent hop count" section.
To perform these procedures, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.
Check memory usage on the server
To check memory usage on the remote access server:
- On the remote access server, click Start, click Run, type taskmgr, and then click OK.
- In the Windows Task Manager dialog box, click the Performance tab.
- Under Physical Memory, check the remote access server's memory usage.
- If necessary, free up available memory by ending non-essential applications or processes.
Remove and reinstall DHCP Relay Agent
To remove and add the DHCP Relay Agent:
- Open Routing and Remote Access. Click Start, click Run, type rrasmgmt.msc, and then press ENTER.
- In the console tree, expand IPv4, right-click DHCP Relay Agent, and then click Delete.
- Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
- Under IPv4, right-click General, and then click New Routing Protocol.
- Click DHCP Relay Agent, and then click OK.
Configure DHCP Relay Agent hop count
To configure DHCP Relay Agent hop count:
- Open Routing and Remote Access. Click Start, click Run, type rrasmgmt.msc, and then press ENTER.
- In the console tree, expand IPv4, and then click DHCP Relay Agent.
- In the details pane, right-click the interface you want to configure, and then click Properties.
- Check the settings in the Hop-count threshold field.
Verify
To verify that the DHCP Relay Agent is working:
From the router with the DHCP Relay Agent enabled, use the ping command to ping each of the DHCP servers that are configured in the DHCP Relay Agent dialog box on the remote access server.
