Backup Options

For information about prerequisites and the overall process, see Checklist: Perform a Manual Backup.

For instructions for using this wizard, see:

Then, you can use this page to specify that you will use the same settings for this backup or that you will use different settings for this backup.

Select Backup Configuration

You can choose to back up all volumes that contain your files, data, applications, and operating system state—or just certain volumes or files.

Select Items for Backup

Select the check boxes for the items you want to include in the backup, and enable the backup to be used for system state recovery or bare metal recovery. In addition, click Advanced Settings to access the tools to exclude certain files or file types, and to specify whether the backup will be a Volume Shadow Copy Service full backup or copy backup.

Specify Destination Type

Specify whether you want to store the backup on an attached drive or in a remote shared folder.

Select Backup Destination

If you are storing the backup on a disk or DVDs, select the disk or DVD drive that you will use.

Specify Remote Folder

If you are storing the backup in a remote shared folder, type the path to the folder.

Note
When you create the backup, the folders WindowsImageBackup \< ComputerName > will be added to the shared folder. The backup will be saved in < ComputerName >. However, you should not append the shared folder with the added folders.

Also on this page, specify whether you want the backup to be available only using the credentials that you used to create the backup, or whether you want to allow anyone who can access the remote folder to be able to access the backup.

Confirmation

Review the choices that you made in the wizard. When you click Finish , the disk or disks that you selected will be formatted and/or the changes that you made to the current schedule will be implemented.

Backup Progress

View the status of whether the schedule was successfully created or modified.

Additional considerations

  • To create a single backup using Windows Server Backup, you must be a member of the Backup Operators or Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

  • If you are using BitLocker Drive Encryption to protect your server, if possible, make sure the storage location you choose is also protected with BitLocker Drive Encryption. This will not happen automatically—it must be enabled explicitly. For instructions, see the Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Step-by-Step Guide (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=143722).
