Event ID 1002 — Language Pack Installation and Removal

Multilingual User Interface (MUI) language packs and Language Interface Packs (LIPs) are installed and removed on your computer using the Language Pack Setup tool (Lpksetup.exe). You can run this program using the Language Pack Setup Wizard or in unattended silent mode.

Correct a disabled language pack

To determine how to fix this error condition, examine the error code reported in the event message text. The event message can report the following error codes:

  • Reason 1
  • Reason 2
  • Reason 4
  • Reason 8
  • Reason 10
  • Reason 20
  • Reason 40 and 80
  • Reason 100
  • Reason 200
  • Reason 400
  • Reason 800
  • Reason 1000

Reason 1

This error indicates that the language pack is already installed on the computer. To see a list of language packs that are installed, in Control Panel, click Change display language. The language packs that are installed will be displayed in the drop-down list.

Reason 2

This error indicates that the language you are trying to uninstall is either the current display language or the first language that was installed on the computer (which you cannot remove). If you are trying to uninstall a language pack, change the display language to another language before attempting to uninstall again. To change the display language, click Change display language in Control Panel and select a language from the drop-down list.

Reason 4

This error indicates that the parent language pack for this Language Interface Pack (LIP) is not yet installed. LIPs require at least one parent language since the entire user interface is not translated. For example, the Basque LIP can be installed only after the Spanish (Spain) or French (France) language pack has been installed. The parts of the user interface that are not translated into the LIP language will be displayed in the parent language. When you download a LIP, you are given the parent language requirements for that language. To resolve this error, install the parent language for this LIP, and then install the LIP.

Reason 8

This error indicates that you are trying to uninstall a language pack that is the parent language pack for a LIP that is on this computer. You cannot uninstall this parent language pack until you uninstall any languages that depend on it. Uninstall any dependent languages and then try again.

Reason 10

This error indicates that Lpksetup encountered an internal error. There are two reasons why you may have received this error:

  • If you are installing from the network, you may have received this error because Lpksetup could not access the shared network resource that contains the language pack. In this scenario, ensure that you have access and sufficient rights to the shared resource, and run Lpksetup again.
  • Otherwise, this could be due to a corrupted computer configuration, registry, or license. Restart your computer and try Lpksetup again. If you continue to receive this error, then contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS). You cannot install an additional MUI language pack onto this computer. To solve this problem, do one of the following:

Reason 40 and 80

This error indicates that you cannot install this language pack onto this edition of Windows.

Reason 100

This error indicates that the language pack is invalid because the metadata in the .cab file is not complete. To solve this problem, obtain a valid language pack and try again.

Reason 200

This error indicates that Component-Based Services (CBS) has reported that the language pack is not applicable to this computer. There are two possible causes of this error:

  • The version of the language pack is for a different architecture. This can happen if you are trying to install a language pack for an x86-based computer onto an x64-based computer. In this case, you should verify that the language pack is supported for your architecture.
  • The language pack is either invalid or corrupt. Lpksetup could not validate the contents of the .cab file for this language pack. Some files in the language pack may be missing or corrupted. To fix this issue, verify the source of the language pack or run Windows Update again.

Reason 400

This error indicates that the LIP is incorrectly marked as a fully or partially localized language pack in the .cab file. The .cab file for this language pack may have been tampered with. To solve this problem, download the LIP again from https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=66923 and then try again.

Reason 800

This error indicates that you have tried to install a language pack that is incorrectly marked as a LIP in the .cab file. The .cab file for this language pack may have been tampered with. To solve this problem, verify the source of the language pack or run Windows Update again again.

Reason 1000

This error indicates that Lpksetup ran out of disk space while performing the operation. When Lpksetup is first executed, it estimates whether the available disk space will be enough to complete the operation. Your computer passed this check, but Lpksetup ran out of disk space during the installation. There are two possible causes for this error:

  • You used more disk space after Lpksetup started installing the language. To fix this problem, run Lpksetup again and ensure that you do not use a significant amount of disk space once the installation begins.
  • The required disk space exceeded the disk space that Lpksetup estimated was required. To fix this problem, free up some disk space and run Lpksetup again.

Verify

To verify that the language pack was successfully installed or removed:

  1. In Control Panel, click Change display language (located under the Clock, Language, and Region section).
  2. Verify the language is listed (or not listed) in the drop-down list.

Note: The drop-down list will only be visible if you have already installed a language pack or if your operating system supports Multilingual User Interface (MUI). MUI language packs can only be installed on Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Enterprise.
