Join a Domain from a Workgroup

Use this procedure to join a Message Queuing computer in workgroup mode to a domain, or move a Message Queuing computer to a different forest.
Message Queuing can be used in an environment that is not part of a Server domain, such as a computer that is part of a family operating system workgroup. If Message Queuing is run on a computer that is part of a workgroup, that computer can later join a domain. For a Message Queuing computer running on a family computer to be able to join a new domain, a domain controller must be available in its site. It is also advisable that the domain controller be configured as a global catalog server.
When a Message Queuing computer has been configured with directory service integration functionality, this functionality will be provided whenever that computer is joined to a domain.
You can use this procedure to join a Message Queuing computer in workgroup mode to a domain, or move a Message Queuing computer to a different forest.
Warning
When you join a Message Queuing computer in workgroup mode to a domain, or move a Message Queuing computer to a different forest, all messages in outgoing transactional queues on the computer will be discarded, or placed in the dead-letter queue if negative source journaling is enabled.
Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure. To join the computer to an Active Directory Domain Services domain, you must have permissions to create a computer account or to join the computer to an account pre-created by the administrator.
To join a domain from a workgroup
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Open System in Control Panel.
Under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings click Change settings.
On the Computer Name page, click Change.
Under Member of, click Domain, type the domain name, and then click OK.
When prompted, provide a valid user name and password.
When prompted, restart your computer to apply the changes.
Additional considerations
To perform this procedure, the directory service integration feature must be selected during setup. If the directory service integration feauture is not installed, Message Queuing can run only in workgroup mode.
Use this procedure if you are running Message Queuing in a workgroup environment and want to join (or rejoin) a domain. When you join a domain, the computer can access public queues listed in Active Directory Domain Services.
You can also use this procedure to join a workgroup from a domain. In that case, click Workgroup under Member of and type the name of the workgroup. You will be disjoined from the domain.
You can use this procedure to move a computer from one domain to another domain within your forest. In this case, if you leave the msmq (MSMQ Configuration) object in the old domain, the computer will continue to use the old object. Otherwise, it will create a new msmq object in the new domain.
After joining a domain from a workgroup or another domain, some time (as much as 20-30 minutes) is required for replication of the changes in Active Directory Domain Services.
Successful installation of the directory service integration feature of Message Queuing on a Windows Server 2008 R2 computer that is a domain controller requires that specific permissions are set in Active Directory Domain Services.
