Diagnose
This error might be caused by one of the following conditions:
- The printer IP address or subnet is wrong
- There are DNS problems
To diagnose the problem, use the instructions in the following sections.
The printer IP address or subnet is wrong
If the affected printer is a network printer, physically check the printer or use the printer's configuration Web page (if available) to verify that it has an IP address in the same subnet as the site listed in the Location field for the printer in the printer's Properties dialog box.
If the printer does not have the correct subnet, see the section titled "Renew the printer IP address and subnet".
There are DNS problems
To check DNS functionality:
- Open the Command Prompt window, and then type nslookup print_server_name, where print_server_name is the computer name of the print server, and then press ENTER.
- If the nslookup command fails, see the section titled "Fix DNS server problems".

Renew the printer IP address and subnet
To fix a printer with an incorrect IP address and subnet, perform the following actions:
- Turn off the print device, and then turn it back on to renew the printer IP address with the Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) server.
- Use the controls on the print device to change the IP address and subnet or to renew the printer IP address with the DHCP server.
Fix DNS server problems
To resolve DNS server problems, restart the DNS Server service on the DNS server. To do this, open the Services snap-in from the Administrative Tools folder, click the DNS Server service, and then click the Restart Service toolbar button.
