Managing a DNS Server

After a Domain Name System (DNS) server has been installed and configured, it is sometimes necessary to perform additional tasks to manage and maintain the server. These tasks include the following:

  • Changing the IP address of the DNS server, for example, when the server is moved to a new network segment

  • Modifying default server settings to improve performance or enhance security

  • Managing root hints to ensure that the DNS can learn and discover authoritative servers that manage domains that are located at a higher level or in other subtrees of the DNS domain namespace

  • Managing how the DNS server integrates with Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to store and replicate DNS data
