Cannot attach a network ISO when remotely managing a server running Hyper-V

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2

A known user rights delegation issue exists where an account does not have sufficient privileges, when remotely managing a server, to open an ISO file stored on a different network share.

This article applies to the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

When remotely managing a server running Hyper-V, if you configure a virtual machine on the remote server to use an ISO present on a network share, an error occurs stating that access is denied, and that the ISO failed to be added to the virtual machine.

Cause

This is a user rights delegation issue, in which the rights to access the remote server are not delegated.

Workaround

Instead of running the Hyper-V Manager MMC snap-in remotely, physically log onto the server running Hyper-V and configure the virtual machine to use the ISO present on the network share. If this option is not available to you, then you can copy the ISO over to the computer you use to access your server running Hyper-V directly. After you have completed this step, you can remotely manage your server running Hyper-V and configure the virtual machine to use the ISO that is not present on the computer you used to remotely manage your server running Hyper-V.
