I am using word 365 Version 2201 (Build 14827.20158 Click-to-Run).
In a large document with many images, when you change from Print Layout to Web Layout, all images after a certain point are NOT displayed.
It is only the last 15 images that are not displayed, the properties look ok, all inline.
I tried deleting an image, I tried adding back a snipped image (from a test document) and it would not display either.
Switch back to Print Layout and you can see the images again.
It looks likes like some sort of internal limit of displayed images in Web Layout.

From a view where all pictures are shown, try copying the document content, excluding the final paragraph mark of the document, into a new, blank file.
To show/hide paragraph marks, ¶, as well as other nonprinting marks, click the ¶ icon on the Home tab.

I've had this a number of times over the years, I've currently got a document of notes that I've been gradually adding to, often dropping in screen snips. It's now a 415 page document. it's really irritating to have to use print mode only : as it truncates lots of the screen snips, so I can't see them. web layout has stopped displaying images beyond a certain point. So 2024 : the bug is still hard baked in. Really irritating. By implication as this has been for some years, I presume this is super low priority.

I am creating a mega document. I am using a billion headers, and under each header I have pictures with information. I need this document to navigate information quickly, and after a certain point it can't show the pictures in Web Layout, only in print layout. This is very bad, because Web Layout is much larger and easier to work with, where print Layout is small and crammed.
I can see this issue has persisted since 2013 the OP says?
It is nearly 2025 now. Over 10 years later, how come Microsoft, one of the greatest companies in world with a market cap over over 3 trillion dollars, haven't managed to solve this issue? I am sure your developers are more of capable than solving this. If it can support 200 pages with a billion pictures, it should be able to support endless pages with endless pictures.
It's so sad having to use Print Layout, or use several documents, for what could have been used in a single document. Big blunder.
