Standard Buffer Types

Windows Media Encoder SDK banner art

Buffers can have a great variety of configurations, but four standard types are available in the Buffer Properties window, as shown in the following table.

Standard Buffer Description
Standard 3D (Dry) Enables 3-D spatialization, without reverb. Good for nonmusical sound effects.
Standard Reverb Includes a reverb effect suitable for music. See Reverb Send and Chorus Send Buses.
Standard Mono Mono buffer with no effects.
Standard Stereo Stereo buffer with no effects.

Each standard buffer is preset in the following ways:

  • One or two buses are created. Each standard buffer type uses the appropriate bus or buses. These are displayed in the Bus column as Default.
  • The number of audio channels used in the buffer is set to at least the number of buses.
  • The Standard Reverb buffer contains an effect. This is not shown in the Effects list, as no change can be made as long as the buffer remains a standard buffer.
  • The Stereo buffer and Reverb buffers have two channels.
  • Settings such as volume and pan are left at their default, neutral values, so that settings in PChannels are not affected.

A fifth standard buffer type, the Standard Environmental Reverb Buffer, cannot be used in a mix group that contains PChannels, and is not available as a selection in the Buffer Properties window. It is used only as a destination for Send Effects.
