You must have ownership credentials for the site collection to complete some site collection administrative tasks, such as restoring items that are in a site collection's Recycle Bin.

Primary and secondary site collection owners are also site collection administrators. However, these owners are the only users who receive e-mail notifications for events, such as pending automatic deletion of inactive sites. By default, site collection owners also receive requests for access from users who have been denied access. A user who is a member of the Site Administrator SharePoint group can use the Site Administration pages to change the e-mail address that receives requests for access.

Note

Even if you remove an owner from the Site Administrator SharePoint group for the site, that user continues to retain the owner flag in the database and can still perform Web site administrative tasks.

Note

The action of changing ownership of sites is logged in the Security log in Event Viewer.

Membership in the Farm Administrator SharePoint group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

Use this procedure to take ownership of a site collection.

Take ownership of a site collection

  1. On the top navigation bar, click Application Management.

  2. On the Application Management page, in the SharePoint Site Management section, click Site Collection Administrators.

  3. If the selected site is not the site for which you want to take ownership, on the Site Collection Administrators page, on the Site Collection menu in the Site Collection section, click Change Site Collection.

    1. In the Select Site Collection dialog box, select the site for which you want to take ownership.

    2. Click OK.

  4. In either the Primary site collection administrator user text box or the Secondary site collection administrator user text box, enter the user name of the user to give him ownership.

    Tip

If there is no secondary site collection administrator, you can add the user name of the user to give that user control for the role. If there is a secondary site collection administrator, take ownership of either the primary collection administrator role or the secondary collection administrator role.

  5. Click OK. The ownership is granted.
