You can take ownership of a site collection to perform administrative tasks, but after completing the required tasks, you need to restore ownership of the site collection to the original owner. You cannot perform any further administrative tasks after returning the ownership to the original owner.
Note
Changing ownership of sites is logged in the Security log in Event Viewer.
Membership in the Farm Administrator SharePoint group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.
Return ownership of a site collection
Use this procedure to return ownership of a site collection.
Return ownership of a site collection
On the top navigation bar, click Application Management.
On the Application Management page, in the SharePoint Site Management section, click Site Collection Administrators.
If the selected site is not the site for which you want to return ownership, on the Site Collection menu in the Site Collection section, click Change Site Collection.
In the Select Site Collection dialog box, select the site that you want to return ownership to.
Click OK.
In either the Primary site collection administrator user text box or the Secondary site collection administrator user text box, enter the original user name.
Click OK. The ownership is restored to the original owner.
