Create a shared scope (Office SharePoint Server 2007)

Use this procedure to create a shared scope. A search service administrator must create a shared scope and define its scope rules before it can be added to scope display groups — for example, to the scope display groups that are in Search Scope list and the Advanced Search page — for users to see and search.
Note
Shared scopes are available across all site collections within a particular Shared Services Provider (SSP). Any new shared scopes or changes to existing shared scopes will affect all site collections in the SSP. In contrast, scopes created by a site collection administrator are available only within that site collection.
Once you have created a shared scope:
To add scope rules, see Add a scope rule for a shared scope (Office SharePoint Server 2007).

Important
To complete the following procedure, you must be a search service administrator for the relevant SSP — for example, for SharedServices1. For more information, see Plan for security roles (Office SharePoint Server).
If you also have administration permissions for the Central Administration site, follow the procedure from step 1. If you do not have administration permissions for the Central Administration site, browse to the Shared Services Administration site (for example, http://[host:port]/ssp/admin/default.asp) and follow the procedure from step 2.
To create a shared scope
Create a shared scope
In the SharePoint Central Administration site, in the Quick Launch, in the Shared Services Administration group, click the SSP (for example SharedServices1). If prompted, provide your shared services administrator user name and password.
On the Shared Services Administration page, in the Search section, click Search settings. On the Configure Search Settings page, in the Scopes section, click View Scopes.
The View Scopes page shows the existing shared scopes for the SSP and the local scopes.
On the View scopes page, click New Scope.
On the Create Scope page:
In the Title and Description section, give the scope a title. The title is the name that users will see in the scope list, for example in the Search drop-down list. The description is optional. It is for reference only and is not displayed to end-users.
In the Target Results Page section, select Use the default Search Results Page to display the results for this scope on the default results search page. To use a different search results page, select Specify a different page for searching this scope, and then type the relative path to an existing results page in an existing Search Center site in the Target results page box — for example, http://contoso:12345/SearchCenterSite/results.aspx.
Click OK to save the changes.

The Update Status for the new shared scope will be set to Empty.
