Configuring the Windows Messenger

For your Windows Messenger client to communicate with an IP phone, you need to configure the client to use the Communications Service Account.

To configure Communications Service for the Windows Messenger

In Windows Messenger, from the File menu, choose Tools.
Choose Options, and then choose the Accounts tab.
Select Communications Service as the first account to use when signing in.
In the Communications Service Account, select the My contacts include users of communications service check box.

If you want your other contacts to keep communicating with you, you can keep the .NET Passport or Exchange accounts selected.
Type your <Sign In Name> in the format someone@example.com.

You can use any fictitious name as long as the format is <Name>@<Domain>.com.
Choose Advanced.
Select Configure Settings.
Type the name or the IP address of the session initiation protocol (SIP) server.

If you do not have a SIP server, then you cannot communicate with the IP phone.
Select UDP as the network transport type.
Choose OK.
If you are currently signed in, from the File menu, choose Sign Out.
From the File menu, choose Sign In as<Sign In Name> as you did in step 5 of this procedure.

You are now ready to receive calls from the IP phone.
