Part Properties

Each part in the pattern has a Properties Window, as shown in the following figure.

Part Properties

The window contains the following settings:

  • Name

Internal name for the part. Part names are useful when you create multiple parts on the same PChannel. For example, you might have a part for lead trumpet and another part for the rest of the trumpet section. If these two parts use the same instrument, you can place them on the same PChannel. You can give the PChannel a name that describes its use, such as high brass, but you can also assign separate part names, such as lead or section, to the two parts in the pattern. Another use is in percussion parts, which might share PChannel 10. You can use the part name to indicate which part belongs to each percussion sound.

  • PChannel

Performance channel on which the part plays. Select a number in the range from 1 to 999. Some PChannels are reserved for percussion; see PChannel Number.

  • PChannel Name

Name of the PChannel, used throughout the project.

  • Inversion Boundaries

Boundaries for how high or low a part can transpose when it plays over different chords. Notes beyond the boundaries are shifted one octave so they fall within the limits. The boundaries you choose affect only the part you are editing, and are not transferred to any other components, even if they use the same PChannels. For more information, see Inversion Boundaries.

  • Lock ID

Group identifier for parts whose variation numbers must always match. Parts with the same ID play in tandem, so each time a different variation plays in one part, all other parts in the locked group play their own variations of the same number. For more information, see Variation Locking.

  • Play

Manner in which variations are selected each time the segment loops. The choices shown in the following table are available on the drop-down list.

    Selection Effect
in random order Variations are played randomly.
in order from first Variations are played in order, starting with the first.
in order from random Variations are played in order, starting from a random position.
with no repeats Variations are played randomly, but none is repeated until all have played.
by shuffling All variations are played, then shuffled and played again.

This setting applies not only to audition and recording in Pattern Editor, but also to run-time files that use the style.

  • Time Sig

Click to open the Set Time Signature and Grid Dialog Box.

The time signature and grid settings for a part override those for the style or segment in the display of that part.

When you use a different time signature in a part than in the style or segment, the final measure in the part might be left incomplete. For more information, see Part Length.

  • Length

Click to set the length of the part and add pickup and extension bars, shown as Pickup and Ext in the Properties window. See Part Length and Extra Measures.

  • Note Color

Click these buttons to select colors for selected and unselected notes in this part only.

  • Default Play Mode

Default Play Mode and Chord Level for notes in the part.
