The following Properties Window shown in the following figure contains settings for a pattern in the Style Designer Window.

Pattern Properties window

The window contains the following settings:

  • Pattern Name

Name of the pattern, used within DirectMusic Producer.

  • Length

Length of the pattern. Click the button to set the length. You can choose any number of measures from 1 through 999. Because patterns generally loop repeatedly during playback, a typical length is from one to four measures.

Shortening a pattern removes measures from the end of the pattern. Any note data in the measures that you remove is lost.

Parts within a pattern can have different lengths than the pattern. For information, see Part Length.

  • Groove Range

Range of groove levels for which the pattern can be used, in the range from 1 to 100. See Groove Ranges.

  • Destination Range

Groove range of destination segments for which the pattern is valid. When used in Transitions, the pattern can be selected only if the destination range includes the beginning groove level of the destination segment. This setting has no effect when the pattern is not being used in a transition.

  • Embellishment

Special role or roles of the pattern. Click one or more buttons to select them. If you select Custom, enter or select a value in the range from 100 to 199. See Embellishments.

  • Chord Rhythm

Points within the pattern where chord changes can appropriately occur. In the display, each mark is a beat, and each space is a measure boundary. Long lines indicate beats where chord changes are appropriate. Click Set to open the Set Pattern Chord Rhythm Dialog Box. For more information, see Chord Rhythm.
